How to Use Apostrophes Correctly
How to Use Apostrophes Correctly Writing a research paper without any grammar mistakes may be challenging, and here is a quick guide for you to follow. In this post, we will show you how to use apostrophes in academic writing. à à à à What Is an Apostrophe? Apostrophe (ââ¬â¢) looks like a comma hanging at the top of the line. In English, it is used to indicate possession (Samââ¬â¢s book, Maryââ¬â¢s dress) and to contract words (donââ¬â¢t instead of do not, youââ¬â¢re instead of you are). à Apostrophes for Possession Use an apostrophe followed by s (ââ¬â¢s) AFTER a proper name or noun denoting an organisation or person to say that something (or someone) belongs to them. The employees of Tesco - Tescoââ¬â¢s employees The money of the fund - the fundââ¬â¢s money The daughter of the founder - the founderââ¬â¢s daughter The plan of Steve - Steveââ¬â¢s plan When you state possession or membership, an apostrophe is better than a preposition. As you see in the examples above, the forms using apostrophes are more concise and flow better. When the noun standing for the possessor is plural and ending in ââ¬âs, add only an apostrophe without s: The employeesââ¬â¢ pensions The colonistsââ¬â¢ heritage When the noun is plural, but not ending in ââ¬âs, use an apostrophe followed by s (ââ¬â¢s) like for a singular noun: Womenââ¬â¢s wear Childrenââ¬â¢s toys When the noun is singular and ends in ââ¬âs, you can use either an apostrophe followed by s or only an apostrophe: Thomasââ¬â¢s books Thomasââ¬â¢ books Both forms are conventional English. Unless your tutor explicitly prescribes the use of either, you are free to choose. The main thing is to be consistent. Whatever form you prefer, stick to it throughout the paper. You canââ¬â¢t have Thomasââ¬â¢ in one paragraph and Thomasââ¬â¢s in another. à Apostrophes for Contraction A bit of good news. You will not be using many of these in your academic paper. Actually, you will want to avoid them whenever possible. Contractions using apostrophes (doesnââ¬â¢t, havenââ¬â¢t, weââ¬â¢re, weââ¬â¢ll) are bad academic style. Tutors may deduce points if you use them. Just write both words in full. NO: The investors havenââ¬â¢t yet estimated the cash flows. YES: The investors have not yet estimated the cash flows. NO: Weââ¬â¢ll conduct another survey. YES: We will conduct another survey. The ONLY case when you use apostrophes for contraction in a research paper is when you directly cite another personââ¬â¢s words. In this case, contractions are appropriate to convey natural human speech. Put another personââ¬â¢s words in double quotation marks. Check that the apostrophe stands in its proper place. MS Word will fix some obvious confusions, e. g. havent or doesnt, by automatically inserting an apostrophe. However, were in place of weââ¬â¢re or well in place of weââ¬â¢ll can be challenging to spot. You can use a free grammar checking tool, e. g. Grammarly, to deal with these. LOOK OUT! Confusion of youââ¬â¢re (you are), you and your is one of the most common errors that even native English speakers make. If you have any interviews, double-check these forms in your transcripts. NO: ââ¬Å"Your my best employeeâ⬠, he said. NO: ââ¬Å"You my best employeeâ⬠, he said. YES: ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re my best employeeâ⬠, he said. Consult this guide to avoid common errors in the use of apostrophes. As you gain practice, you will start to see right away which form goes where.

King Tut s Death Mask And The Statues Of Rameses
Once towering, but now slowly crumbling pyramids grace the horizon, bejeweled and dusty royal mummies lay buried and forgotten by the sands of time, and mysterious and often strangely heroic murals intertwined with a scattering of hieroglyphics sprawl across the walls of tombs and temples alike. These are the only evidence left of a once vast empire that is rapidly falling into disrepair as its already decrepit state grows worse. However, the current state of ancient Egypt does not curb the curiosity of adventure seekers looking to peek into a diminished era; today, a multitude of onlookers wander through the glorious yet now empty tombs that once held ancient Egyptââ¬â¢s elite. Millions more in museums around the world peer through the glass enclosing the precious jewels, fragmented pottery and statues, and frayed and often threadbare garments that before adorned peasant and monarch alike. Nevertheless, it is the fascinating intricacies and myths surrounding pieces such as King T utââ¬â¢s death mask and the statues of Rameses the Great that still grip one with awe and leave lingering unanswered questions behind. What was Egypt like during the reign of each of these age-old monarchs? Even more so, what traits and morals did each hold that wove legacies characterized with such vivid larger than life personas of each, yet above all else, how could one pharaoh inscribe his story in our hearts as to ensure an enduring image even after his death? Case Study Highway Construction
Question: Writeabout the Case Studyfor Highway Construction. Answer: Introduction The project in this case study involved construction of a four lane highway that would connect two major metropolitan areas in the region. The highway covered a distance of 20 km and the project entailed construction of the highway itself and all its associated furniture, including traffic domes, lane markers, steel covers, light poles, bus shelters, signposts, crash barriers, signs, guide posts, etc. The project was sponsored by the government and it was very important for persons both in the private and public sectors. The total cost of the project was about $40 million. One of the key features and/or challenges of this project is that a section of it was being constructed through a national park. This elicited a lot of reactions from different stakeholders and the general public as a whole. Therefore the project team had to involve all stakeholders, including conservancies, social activists and the general public, to ensure that all potential benefits and impacts were properly bal anced. My responsibility in this project was an estimation/quantity engineer. My key role was to determine and manage all costs related to the project. This involved determining initial estimates and involving and consulting all relevant stakeholders so as to come up with the final figures. My other responsibilities included: carrying out feasibility studies so as to estimate material and labor costs and the timeline of the project; completing quantity take-offs; sending enquiries so as to obtain and analyze prices; collecting quotes from suppliers and sub-contractors; preparing and evaluating material lists, tender documents, and invitation to tender; analyzing and negotiating tender and contract costs; reviewing drawings and specifications of the project; analyzing safety and health implications of the project; calculating profits; creating and submitting work quotations; assigning future work to relevant contractors; coordinating work efforts of different stakeholders; resolving disputes arising from contracting parties; providing advice on several contractual and legal issues; valuing finished works by contractors and making arrangements for their payments; assessing risk levels of the project; monitoring all project stages to ensure that budgets are within forecast limits; maintaining relevant documentation and records needed for invoices/ claims and all other commercial activities as per contract conditions; and preparing comprehensive progress reports. While performing these tasks, sometimes I worked from the office and on site. My main focus was also to minimize costs, maximize value for every dollar that was spent on the project and ensure that client needs were fully achieved. I also had to ensure that all services and materials used on the project achieved the necessary standards and statutory construction regulations. My level of responsibility in this project as per the hierarchy of construction jobs was middle level. At this level, I was involved in the project from start to finish because my contribution was highly valuable. The key stakeholders in this project included: the client/developer/owner, designers, architects, engineers (civil engineer and structural engineer), consultants, construction/project manager, main contractor, design for safety coordinator, sub-contractors, and suppliers. This project took about four-and-a-half years to be completed. The Scientific Method an Example by
The Scientific Method When conclusions are induced from observing natural ecological processes, it is possible that the wrong conclusions are made, such as the once-believed notion that frogs originate from mud. When controlled experimentation occurs, results appear that are different from a control experiment. It is therefore possible to see the difference between what normally takes place ecologically and what results from adding a factor. It is more conclusive and scientifically responsible to experiment, rather than observe (Carter 2004). Need essay sample on "The Scientific Method" topic? Its negative impact on its environment is choking out resources to other native plants, by taking soil moisture, nutrients, and sunlight for itself and outcompeting other nearby plants. It is also a problem due to its lack of natural animal predators - not many birds or other animals eat it. Its impact could have been lessened by very strict regulation of its introduction and establishment, but once it had begun to proliferate, action to eradicate the plant is necessary. Selective burning has been implemented in some states already (USDA). The scientific method can be applied to ecological problems by recreating situations in the laboratory. If it is known that birds live in an area with high air pollution, birds can be tested for blood levels of the chemicals in the air, and therefore it is discovered how air pollution affects birds in that area. In scientific testing, replication of the experiment is necessary many times; quantitative data is necessary; and conclusions must only be deduced after exhausting all possibilities. The scientific method has been used for many centuries of scientific exploration, and it is necessary for the experimentation of modern ecological issues. There are plenty of humans and animals that live among the testable "conditions" who can participate in studies. Also, current ecological situations can be recreated in labs, in order to carefully control probable factors and therefore discover results without harming either humans or animals (Carter 2004). Immigration Camps or Hell Professor Ramos Blog
Immigration Camps or Hell Immigrants in the United States have been going through a very tough time, especially the ones that spend their days crowded in a cage like area with other immigrants. Videos have come out to the media showing the way that little children sleep with thin aluminum blankets and men gathered telling the reporters that they have not had enough food to eat and water to drink. Itââ¬â¢s very heartbreaking to see parents being separated and sent back to their country and have to leave their children in the United States. A way to resolve this problem would be to reunite families back together. In this essay, I will be arguing that immigration camps should be fully shut down due to the terrible living conditions that the immigrants are put in and the high suicide rates and isolation that occur inside the camp. The first reason that immigrants should be reunited with their children and families is because of the terrible living conditions that they go through. Adam Serwer, a staff writer of The Atlantic, said, ââ¬Å" It was difficult to move in any direction without jostling and being jostled.â⬠They are given thin blankets but not enough hygiene products in order to keep clean. The children also together in a cement floor without their mothers. He also mentions that the ICE Officers donââ¬â¢t do anything to clean up the filth inside the camps. Serwer also compares the conditions of the current camp to the camp that used to hold Confederate prisoners. He quotes James McPherson, a historian who said, ââ¬Å"13,000 of the 45,000 men imprisoned ââ¬Å"died of disease, exposure, or malnutrition.â⬠(McPherson par. 2). Henry Wirz, the warden of the prison during the Confederate War was arrested in 1865 and was accused of intending to ââ¬Å"impair and injure the health and to destr oy the lives [of the prisoners], by subjecting [them] to torture and great suffering by confining in unhealthy and unwholesome quarters.â⬠(McPherson par.3).à This should be able to show people why keeping immigrants insides camps in unethical and dangerous. Another situation that immigrants are put through is the food given to the men, women, and children. The food that is given to them is said to be inedible. Serwer got an actual confession from a person inside the camp saying that ââ¬Å"The water provided them was foul,â⬠of a dark color.â⬠He also states ââ¬Å" Our ration was in a quality a starving one, it being either too foul to be touched or too raw to be digestedâ⬠(Serwer par.1).à Hamed Aleaziz, a BuzzFeed news reporter, states, ââ¬Å" There was little access to hot showers or hot food for families and children in some facilities.â⬠He also said that, ââ¬Å"At two facilities, children and families did not have hot meals until the week the inspectors arrivedâ⬠(Aleaziz par.1). Jonathan M. Katz, a journalist for The Los Angeles Times, explains that, ââ¬Å"In the last year, at least seven migrant children have died in the federal custody.â⬠And if no changes are made anytime soon by reuniting and closing the camps, more innocent men, women and children will continue to die under federal custody. The second reason for the closing would be that camps are also having a problem with the high suicide count that they have in their hands. Renuka Rayasam, a POLITICO based health care reporter states that, ââ¬Å" One estimate puts the number of detainees with mental illnesses between 3,000 and 6,000.â⬠Another statement that she has was that, ââ¬Å"Detainees had made nouses from bed sheets in 15 of 20 cells in the facility they visitedâ⬠(Rayasam par.1). Katz also says, ââ¬Å" Memos surfaced by journalist Ken Klippenstein revealed that Immigration and Customs Enforcementââ¬â¢s failure to provide medical care was responsible for suicides and other deaths of detaineesâ⬠(Katz par. 15). Due to all the suicides that have occured, Rayasam also states that, ââ¬Å"Many of the migrants with mental illness are not stable enough to participate in their own legal proceedings, so they languish in detention.â⬠Suicide isnââ¬â¢t the only problem that immigrants go th rough. Immigrants who are transgender or who have a mental illness are also kept isolated from all the other immigrants. Another difficulty that the migrant children is that ââ¬Å"The Trump administration cut funding for classes, recreation and legal aid at detention centers holding minorsâ⬠(Katz par. 3). He also says that ââ¬Å"Months after being torn from their parentââ¬â¢s arms, 37 children were locked in vans for up to 39 hours in the parking lot of a detention centerâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Katz. par.3) This is proof that shows the maltreatment that innocent children go through when they get separated from their parents and while they wait inside the camps. A solution that could help keep families together while still keeping an eye on the immigrants would be to keep them under community supervision. Alexia Fernandez Campbell, a politics and policy reporter for VOX explains that community supervision is a ââ¬Å"Nonprofit group or government contractor provides families with social workers who help them find housing and transportation.â⬠Another idea that is suggested by Campbell would be to ââ¬Å"release immigrants with electronic monitoring, which generally involves placing GPS ankle monitors on adults and assigning them caseworkersâ⬠(Campbell par. 8). This would allow them to be reunited with their family members and their children wouldnââ¬â¢t have to live with other family members or be sent to foster care with unknown people. Social workers that would be assigned to each immigrant that was in the camp would also be able to supervise them outside of the jail. The mothers with children would also be able to get the c are that they needed from the asylum while being checked on with no problem. The article also says that, ââ¬Å"The contractor that ran the program said that 99 percent of participants ââ¬Å"successfully attended their court appearances and ICE check insâ⬠(Campbell par. 15). This goes to show that the immigrants would want to follow the rules in order to try to stay in the United States.à In conclusion, the camps should be shut down due to terrible conditions that theyââ¬â¢re going through daily. Even while being held, they should still be able to get the necessities that they need before they are sent back to their country or while they stay inside for asylum. Social workers could also make sure that they follow the rules in order to go through the immigration process. Innocent children shouldnââ¬â¢t have to die alone where they have access to medical care that could easily help them. They shouldnââ¬â¢t have to get so many terrible maltreatments while they wait for their fate in this country. What seems to be so significant about this paper is it tries to revive to the consciousness of the modern people the importance and contributions of the ancient knowledge and culture that have become one of the guiding conventions of the modern people in generating new concepts and designs related to architecture. At the same time, it tries to highlight the pivotal conditions that surround the architectural design of the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, one of the wonders of the Ancient World. The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus was designed by the architect Chersiphron and is said to be the very first temple built out of marble and the largest Greek temple erected and measures 377 feet long and 180 feet wide (Temple of Artemis). The very first shrine was constructed around 800 B.C.E. and had major reconstructions during the 600 B.C.E., 550 B.C.E. and 356 B.C.E. (unmusem.org). However, during the reconstruction period of the temple, Theodorus, Scopas of Paros became contributing architects for Temple of Artemis (clevelys.co.uk). The Temple of Artemis was erected at the marshy fields of the Ephesus at the Asia Minor (greatbuildings.com). This temple is regarded to be one of the wonders of the ancient world (yousigma.com). Its highlights several conventions of architecture and culture present during the early human times. This architectural edifice is a treasure damaged due to several complexities that have risen during that time. Also, the historical relevance of the temple is crucial to determine the cultural influences that have penetrated the construction of the said majestic

Issue and Interdependence Paper Research Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Issue and Interdependence - Research Paper Example It had been known to have started during the rise of industrialization. The need to quantify and analyze the level of industrial technology in a nation led to the stratification of the nations on the basis of their development in the discipline which is influential to every aspect of the society specifically economy. Upon the realization of the said need, countries considered as industrial leaders became the standards and models (Escobar 1995). Nations in the North America and Europe were considered as the model nations and were referred to as the First World nations because of being industrialized. The notion of the stratified world is the main principle that affected and is continuously dominating the modern era, specifically the post-World War II period in terms of the social, economic, cultural, and political aspects (Escobar 1995). The views on the different aspects of the society in the nations classified as Third World are the main targets of the discussion. The classification of the nations on the basis of the concept of the three worlds is often criticized due to prejudice. Some refer to the term as mythical and unreal while others contest that each of the different levels for example the Third World is a mental region which is considered ââ¬Ëintellectual, metaphysical, and experientialââ¬â¢ in nature as desert is a climatic region, the exact location can only be determined by the types of organisms inhabiting the area (Norwine 1988). The Third World then can also be determined by the quality of like and the type of people and technology which can be found in the particular nation. To be able to present the objective of the paper, the different aspects and issues related to the society will be presented. The Aspects and Issues in the Third World There are important issues and aspects of life in the Third World. This includes social, political, economic, and cultural issues. But due to the interdependence and interconnectedness of the different fa ctors, one issue can simultaneously affect two or more aspects of life in the underdeveloped nations. Political Aspect Politics is one of the significant aspects that provides clue to the life in the Third World. Basically, one of the basic characteristics of leadership and government in nations belonging to the Third World is being a young. As compared to nations which had been stable for a long time, the nations in the Third World experienced political renewal, unrest, colonization, coups dââ¬â¢etat, change in the type of government, military leadership and dictatorship, or even war. This is the reason why these countries at the moment are still considered as developing and trying to catch up to the established, stable and developed countries of the First World (Lowder 1986). Based on the references, political struggle for stability is common in the Third World due to the effects of different issues specifically the need for survival since economy and source of livelihood is st ill a problem. Due to the tendency of the government to be unstable as a result of the multitude of problems needed to be dealt with, the concentration of power in a central government is the usual set-up. How the Media Affects Politics Essay Example for Free
How the Media Affects Politics Essay Walt Disney once said, ââ¬Å"Movies can and do have tremendous influence in shaping young lives in the realm of entertainment towards the ideals and objectives of normal adulthood.â⬠Disneyââ¬â¢s argument displays that the media makes a huge impact on the decisions of young people. The media has never had such an influence on peopleââ¬â¢s perspectives and decisions as it does today. In this day and age, this new media is everywhere: on the internet, television, the radio and anything else that is electronic. In the past, the media was not as advanced; it influenced Americansââ¬â¢ presidential choices less than it does today. The new media makes an impact on whom to vote for. Now that most Americans get their political news through the media, they are subjects to biased information. One form of this new media is the website, College Humor. College Humor has made a grand impact on so many peoples choices, especially choices concerning politics. On College Humor there are many political videos, articles, and visuals that influence many Americans presidential and political party choices. College Humors website is always up to date with the latest news, making it an accurate source for political information. It even has a timeline to display when specific political events take place. In addition, this website is also a show featured on MTV which helps to broaden its audience. College Humorââ¬â¢s audience is mainly college students. College students are usually new voters, therefore they are usually new to politics. In addition, many of these students have yet to decide which political party they would like to support. College Humorââ¬â¢s Youtube page alone has three million subscribers and has over one billion video views. Thus, over three million peopleââ¬â¢s views on politics are being altered. College Humor displays the Democratic Party as extremely liberal and the Republican Party as extremely conservative. There is no ââ¬Å"in the middle partyâ⬠or Independent Party. This websiteââ¬â¢s use of the rhetorical device humor persuades its audience to vote for either Barack Obama or Mitt Romney because it allows you to see the views of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party in their most extreme form. On College Humor, some of the articles, pictures, and videos mock Obama and the policies that he is supporting. One video featured on College Humor is 6-Year Old Gives 10 Reasons NOT to Vote for Obama. In this video, a young child is directed to state ten reasons why Obama is not the right candidate for president. These ten points let the audience know both about Obamaââ¬â¢s character and what he would like to accomplish if he wins this election. The video is biased because it is from a Republicanââ¬â¢s perspective and only displays the negative aspects of Obamaââ¬â¢s policies. The fact that a child was used to display these reasons is a way to appeal to the audience. Most people would pay more attention if a child is speaking rather than an adult. In addition, the childââ¬â¢s diction is sophisticated. Thus, the child is able to establish reasons not to vote for Obama accurately and gain more awareness because of his age. The comments on the video are both negative and positive. The Republicans reacted by stating that the child is ââ¬Å"smart for going against Obama,â⬠that ââ¬Å"he is more sophisticated than most Democrats,â⬠that ââ¬Å"there is nothing wrong with indoctrination,â⬠and that ââ¬Å"this is the best video of the year.â⬠However, the Democrats were offended by this video. They stated that ââ¬Å"using a kid for this is shameful,â⬠that they would ââ¬Å"vote for Obama for all those reasons,â⬠and that ââ¬Å"making your kid say s*** he doesnââ¬â¢t understand is pretty f***** up.â⬠The point that the parents are trying to make by using their son is interpreted differently by members of both parties. It persuades people who have not decided whether or not they are Democratic or Republican because it allows you to get a specific perspective on the Republican party. Many young people who agree with the video might consider becoming a Republican and many who do not agree might consider becoming a Democrat. In addition to videos, articles, and visuals that mock Obama, there are videos, articles, and visuals that mock Romney. College Humor created a video called Mitt Romney Style. Throughout this video, an actor playing Mitt Romney dances and sings about his views and characteristics as a Republican candidate for the 2012 election. This video mocks Romneyââ¬â¢s reputation as a rich man who believes that society should be ran by an elite. It displays how Romney lives a sumptuous life. Romney is portrayed as extremely rich in the lines ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve got a private jet that fliesà me way up in the airâ⬠and ââ¬Å"I bought a mansion for each of my two million heirs, straight up millionaire.â⬠In addition, Romneyââ¬â¢s comment that forty-seven percent of Americans believe that they are ââ¬Å"victimsâ⬠and that they will vote for president Obama ââ¬Å"no matter whatâ⬠is referenced in the part when Romney laughs at the forty-seven percent sign on the waiterââ¬â¢s back. Both parties reacted differently to this parody. The Democrats thought the video was hysterical. They commented saying that Romney should actually sing this song because then they would ââ¬Å"definitely vote for him.â⬠Other Democrats made comments saying that this is the reason Obama is the better candidate. Many Republicans thought this was a harmless video that was meant for a good laugh and thats all. Other Republicans found the video to be very offensive. One Republican actually commented and said, these cheesy/immature videos and others like it have and will influence how voters (especially young ones), decide who to vote for. Another Republican stated, these dumb and false videos are why I weep for the USAs future. People watching the video are being persuaded to vote against Romney. Romney is made to look incompetent. The audience visualizes Romney as someone who loves women, is really rich, and is absurd. While the video I discussed about the six year old mocks Obama and Mitt Romney Style mocks Romney, there are also videos on College Humor that mock both Romney and Obama. A video featured on College Humor called Epic Rap Battle: Mitt Romney vs. Barack Obama ridicules Obama and Romney and changes the view of many voters. In this video, two actors imitate Obama and Romney. The two actors have a debate while rapping. By the end, the audience is asked to choose who won and the viewers comment with their opinions. The Republicans commented, Romney!!! while the Democrats commented, Obama!!! One comment said Oh s***! This changes everything. This displays that this video alone changes the views of voters. Viewers who do not know who they are voting for are receiving false information. Therefore, they might vote for a candidate they THINK suits them but might actually be the complete opposite. Along with videos and pictures, there are also surveys and quizzes on College Humor that persuade voters. On College Humor, there is a quiz called Political Party Picker. This quiz tells the person taking it which political party he or she belongs to. Theà questions only give two answer choices and both choices are extremely conflicting. For example, on of the questions states If Mitt Romney is elected president, you will? The Democratic answer is Cry! Panic! Flee the country and never return! The Republican answer is Party like crazy and celebrate getting your country back. There is no answer that is placed in the middle, which means there is no Independent Party choice. In addition, at the end of the quiz you can only be a Republican or a Democrat. If the person chooses both Democratic and Republican answers, the quiz says that he or she is new to politics and chooses a political party that he or she belongs to. A person who does not know which political party he or she fit into might take this quiz in hopes for an accurate response. However, because there are very few questions with opposing answer choices and no Independent Party, the quiz is not realistic at all. A person who does not know much about politics such as a college student might take this quiz literally and think that he or she is apart of whatever party he or she received. He or she might only vote for that partys candidate. This alters the persons entire view on politics. This displays that media alone can persuade a persons perspective. Any kind of media can persuade a voters perspective. College Humor uses videos, visuals, music, articles, and even quizzes to do so. The variety of types of media College Humor uses makes its argument potent and cogent. College Humors au courant information creates a reliable appearance for the website, which allows many people to believe what it has to say. Many college students, and other young people, are naive and therefore trust websites similar to College Humor. They confide in what the media says because they presume it is genuine. The media is a powerful tool of persuasion because so many people use it as their only source of information. It can change views as well as formulate new views, especially political ones. The media has a massive impact in persuading voters and tremendous influence in shaping young lives. Primary Behavior Changes and Cide Effects of LSD Essay -- Chemistry Ch
Primary Behavior Changes and Cide Effects of LSD LSD (D lysergic acid diethylamide) is a very potent synthetic hallucinogen. It is manufactured from lysergic acid, found in ergot, which is a fungus that grows on grains. In its original form, LSD is a white or clear, odorless, water soluble crystal that can be crushed into a powder and dissolved. LSD goes by the street name ââ¬Å"acidâ⬠or ââ¬Å"blotterâ⬠and is sold in tablets, capsules and sometimes liquid form. Oftentimes LSD is added to absorbent paper and sold in individual squares or ââ¬Å"dosesâ⬠which are then dissolved on the tongue. LSD is an extremely potent mood changing chemical. A personââ¬â¢s subjective world changes drastically once LSD is taken (Blacker, Jones, Stone, & Pfefferbaum, 1968). Users refer to their experience with LSD as a ââ¬Å"trip.â⬠These experiences generally begin about 30 to 90 minutes after taking the drug, and last from 6 to 12 hours. LSD is sometimes described as a drug that breaks down barriers, but the results of taking LSD are complex and variable. Every trip is different and users show a wide range of reactions (Terrill, 1964). The first signs of LSD are usually physical, and can include dilated pupils, salivation, sweating and nausea, loss of appetite, sleeplessness, tremors, dry mouth, chills, raised body temperature, rapid heartbeat and elevated blood pressure. As the trip progresses, oneââ¬â¢s mood, perceptions and sensations become affected (Palfai & Jankiewicz, 2001). In the first phase of the trip there may be abnormal body sensations, changes in mood, space and time distortions and visual hallucinations (Palfai & Jankiewicz, 2001). Time may seem to stand still, or race forward or backward... ... lasting LSD side effect [Letter to the editor]. American Journal of Psychiatry, pp. 1233-1234. Celebrate Italian Christmas Traditions With Children
If youre wondering how to celebrate an Italian Christmas with your children this holiday, here are some educational ideas that will help to keep them entertained, and may even help you start new family traditions at the same time. Christmas is a huge holiday in Italy, a predominantly Catholic country. The season officially begins on the Day of the Immaculate Conception of Mary on Dec. 8, and continue through Jan. 6, the 12th day of Christmas and the Day of the Epiphany. Christmas decorations and Christmas markets first start appearing on Dec. 8. Italian children frequently start the Christmas season on Dec. 6, which is St. Nicholas Day, by writing a letter to St. Nicholas, or Santa Claus. Its easy to share in this tradition by having your own children write to Santa Claus ... and you may get some ideas on what they want for Christmas. Making a Nativity Scene Nativity scenes, or presepi, are a common and elaborate part of Italian Christmas decorations. Naples is the best place to see elaborate presepi, and theres a tremendous display in Saint Peters Square in Vatican City. In Italy, there are also living presepi, in which actors and animals recreate the Nativity scene, exhibitions with hundreds of crà ¨ches and mechanized figurines, and museums devoted solely to presepi. In the spirit of the season, teach a youngster about the history of the nativity and help her to construct her own crà ¨che for the Christmas season. You may find that crà ¨che becomes a precious family heirloom. Italian Cooking and Baking With Kids at Christmas Children of all ages the world over have heart-warming memories of mouth-watering smells emanating from the kitchen at Christmas time. Why not let your children help bake an Italian dessert like biscotti or cicerata. They are two simple, kid-proof dessert recipes that children will enjoy learning to prepare. If you have older children, you can get them involved in meal preparations for Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Italians avoid meat on Christmas Eve as a way of purifying themselves for Christmas and instead focus on fish as the main course. But the menus for both days include multiple dishes and sumptuous cuisine. Sing Italian Christmas Carols Christmas caroling begins in earnest in Italy during the week before Christmas, and caroling is a wonderful way to share Italian Christmas tradition with your children. Popular Italian Christmas carols (canzoni di Natale) include: Gesà ¹ Bambino l ÃË Nato (Baby Jesus Is Born)Tu Scendi dalle Stelle (You Came Down From the Stars)Mille Cherubini in Coro (A Thousand-Cherub Chorus)La Canzone di Zampagnone (Carol of the Bagpipers) For a true diversion, try filastrocche calabresi sul Natale, Calabrian dialect Christmas songs. Learn About the Legend of La Befana You and your children can learn about the legend of La Befana. This story of an old witch who brings presents to children on Jan. 5, the eve of the Feast of the Epiphany, is very appealing to youngsters. La Befana also is called the Christmas Witch, and like Santa Claus, she enters homes through the chimney.
